Is Avocado Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Alligator Pear, Aguacate, Persea americana · Persea americana
What makes it toxic
Persin, a fungicidal toxin present in the leaves, bark, skin and pit. Cats are far less sensitive to persin than birds and livestock, which is why avocado flesh risk is genuinely debated — but ASPCA guidance still treats the whole plant as toxic, the skin and pit carry the highest toxin load, and the high fat content can trigger pancreatitis.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting and diarrhea within hours of eating skin, leaves or pit, abdominal pain from pancreatitis, lethargy and loss of appetite; a swallowed pit adds choking or constipation risk.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove access, note which part was eaten and monitor. Call your vet for repeated vomiting or belly pain, and go promptly if the pit was swallowed, since intestinal obstruction can require urgent surgery.
Common questions
Is avocado flesh really dangerous to cats?
The evidence is mixed. Cats are much more resistant to persin than birds, so some references downplay the flesh, but the ASPCA still lists the plant as toxic, and the pit, skin and leaves are the clearest hazards.
My cat licked guacamole — what now?
Guacamole adds onion, garlic, salt and citrus, which are independently harmful to cats. Call your vet or a pet poison line and describe the amount and the recipe.
Is the pit the biggest danger?
For cats, often yes — though not from persin. A swallowed pit can wedge in the esophagus or intestine, and pit fragments are hard to digest.
