Bay laurel is mildly to moderately toxic to cats. Its essential-oil-rich leaves cause vomiting and diarrhea, and the stiff whole leaf can even obstruct the gut.

Also known as: Sweet Bay, Bay Tree, Grecian Laurel, Laurus nobilis · Laurus nobilis

What makes it toxic

Eugenol and other essential oils in the leathery leaves, which irritate the gut; whole leaves are tough and indigestible, adding a physical obstruction risk.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and lethargy within a few hours of eating leaves, fresh or dried.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove the leaves, offer water and monitor closely. Call your vet if vomiting repeats, the cat becomes lethargic, or you suspect a whole leaf was swallowed.

Common questions

Is the dried bay leaf in my cooking dangerous to my cat?

Yes, at least as much as fresh — dried leaves carry the same oils and are sharper, so they can irritate or obstruct. Bin used bay leaves where a cat cannot fish them out.

Is mountain laurel the same thing?

No — mountain laurel (Kalmia) is a different, far more toxic plant containing grayanotoxins. Do not confuse the two.
