Is Bleeding Heart Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Dicentra, Lamprocapnos, Dutchman’s Trousers, Lyre Flower · Lamprocapnos spectabilis (Dicentra spectabilis)
What makes it toxic
Isoquinoline alkaloids (including protopine and related compounds) in foliage, flowers and especially the roots. In quantity they affect the nervous system, causing trembling and seizures.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite within hours; larger ingestions progress to trembling, weakness, incoordination, labored breathing and seizures.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove plant material and call your vet promptly. For anything more than a leaf nibble, or if tremors appear, go to a vet or emergency clinic immediately.
Common questions
Is the whole plant toxic or just the roots?
All parts contain the alkaloids, but roots are the most concentrated. Cats digging in a bleeding heart bed are at the highest risk.
Can a cat die from bleeding heart poisoning?
Seizures and severe tremors from a large ingestion can be fatal without treatment, though small nibbles usually stay at the vomiting stage. Treat any real ingestion as urgent.
