Yes, caladium is toxic to cats. Its showy leaves are packed with calcium oxalate crystals that burn the mouth on the first bite.

Also known as: Angel Wings, Elephant Ear, Heart of Jesus · Caladium bicolor

What makes it toxic

Very dense insoluble calcium oxalate raphides in leaves, stems and tubers. Chewing injects the needle crystals into the tongue and throat, causing immediate pain and swelling.

Warning signs to watch for

Instant drooling and mouth burning, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, difficulty swallowing and hoarse vocalization within minutes.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth thoroughly, remove plant material and offer water or milk. Call your vet if signs persist beyond an hour; go to an ER for breathing difficulty or severe swelling.

Common questions

Is caladium worse than pothos for cats?

Both cause the same crystal injury; caladium leaves are especially crystal-dense, so reactions can be more intense. Either way, flush the mouth and monitor.

Are the tubers the most dangerous part?

The whole plant carries crystals and the tubers hold a high load. Cats digging into stored caladium bulbs are at real risk — treat tuber chewing as a vet call.
