Spring crocus is only mildly toxic to cats, but the look-alike autumn crocus is deadly — telling the two apart can be a life-or-death difference.

Also known as: Spring Crocus, Dutch Crocus, Crocus vernus · Crocus vernus (spring) — see warning on Colchicum autumnale

What makes it toxic

Spring crocus (Crocus vernus) contains mild GI irritants. The unrelated autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale) contains colchicine, a mitosis poison that shuts down cell division and causes multi-organ failure.

Warning signs to watch for

Spring crocus: drooling, vomiting and diarrhea within hours. Autumn crocus: severe vomiting, GI bleeding, kidney and liver failure, bone marrow suppression within hours to days.

What to do if your cat eats it

If you are unsure which crocus it was, treat it as an emergency and call your vet or poison hotline immediately with photos. Spring crocus nibbles need only monitoring.

Common questions

How do I tell spring crocus from autumn crocus?

Spring crocus blooms with grassy leaves present; autumn crocus (Colchicum) flowers on bare stems with no leaves and blooms in fall. A plant ID app or photo to your vet resolves doubts.

Is autumn crocus really that dangerous to cats?

Yes — colchicine has no antidote and even small ingestions of Colchicum can be fatal. Any suspected autumn crocus chewing is a drop-everything ER situation.
