Is Dieffenbachia Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Dumb Cane, Tropic Snow, Exotica, Spotted Dumb Cane · Dieffenbachia seguine
What makes it toxic
Insoluble calcium oxalate needles packaged in raphide cells, released together with a proteolytic enzyme that inflames tissue. The combination causes immediate intense oral pain and swelling.
Warning signs to watch for
Immediate burning mouth pain, frantic drooling, pawing at the mouth, reluctance to swallow, vomiting, and in significant exposures, swelling that makes breathing loud or labored.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the mouth with water or milk, remove plant material and call your vet for guidance. If the cat is pawing continuously, drooling heavily or breathing noisily, go to a clinic immediately.
Common questions
Why is it called dumb cane around pets?
Because chewing the stem can swell the throat and literally silence the voice in people — the same airway swelling is the risk for a cat.
Can dieffenbachia kill a cat?
Deaths are rare, but severe airway swelling is a genuine risk, especially from the stem. Treat any labored breathing as an emergency.
Is the sap dangerous to eyes or fur?
Yes, sap in the eye causes painful inflammation, and sap on fur gets ingested during grooming. Wipe the fur and rinse the eye, then call your vet.
