Is Elephant Ear Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Caladium, Angel Wings, Alocasia, Colocasia · Caladium bicolor
What makes it toxic
Dense insoluble calcium oxalate raphides in all tissues, especially the leaves and stems. The needles pierce oral tissue the moment it is chewed.
Warning signs to watch for
Instant mouth burning, intense drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, difficulty swallowing and hoarse or noisy breathing if the throat swells.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the mouth with water, remove plant material and call your vet. Any voice change, gagging or loud breathing means go to a clinic immediately.
Common questions
Which plants count as elephant ears?
Caladium, Alocasia and Colocasia are all sold as elephant ears, and all are heavy oxalate producers — none is cat-safe.
Is the tuber worse than the leaves?
Caladium tubers are very crystal-dense and a digging cat can encounter them, but the leaves cause the most exposures.
Will one bite cause symptoms?
Usually yes — the pain is immediate because the crystals act on contact. One bite often teaches a cat to stop, but the first bite still hurts.
