Fig trees are only mildly problematic for cats. The milky sap contains ficin and latex compounds that irritate the mouth and skin, but effects are self-limiting.

Also known as: Common Fig, Edible Fig · Ficus carica

What makes it toxic

Ficin, a proteolytic enzyme, plus latex-like compounds in the sap and leaves. They cause contact irritation of the mouth, eyes and skin rather than systemic poisoning.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, lip rubbing, mild vomiting and skin redness where sap touched. Signs appear quickly and usually fade within a day.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth and any sap-touched skin with water and offer food or water. Call your vet only if vomiting persists or the eyes look painful.

Common questions

Can a cat eat a fig fruit safely?

A small taste of ripe fruit flesh is harmless. The irritation comes from sap, leaves and unripe fruit rather than the edible flesh.

Is my fig tree dangerous indoors?

It is a mild irritant, not a severe toxin. Keep it out of reach of a chewing cat, and wash sap off skin or fur if contact happens.
