Grape ivy is only mildly toxic to cats. Chewing the trailing vine can cause a little drooling and stomach upset, but it is not a dangerous plant.

Also known as: Venezuela Treebine, Oak Leaf Ivy, Cissus Rhombifolia · Cissus rhombifolia

What makes it toxic

Mild triterpenoid irritants in the foliage. They can inflame the mouth and gut but produce only self-limiting signs.

Warning signs to watch for

Occasional drooling, vomiting or soft stools after a chewing session. Signs resolve on their own within a day.

What to do if your cat eats it

Move the vine out of reach and offer water. Call the vet only if vomiting is repeated; otherwise simple monitoring is enough.

Common questions

Is grape ivy safe to hang high with cats?

High hanging helps, but cats reach trailing vines. Since effects are mild, it is a moderate-risk choice — safer than pothos, less ideal than a confirmed nontoxic plant.

Is grape ivy related to grapes danger?

No. Cissus is a vine in the grape family visually, but grape toxicity (Vitis) is a different, poorly-understood problem that does not transfer to this houseplant.
