True jasmine is mildly toxic to cats. Chewing leaves or flowers can cause vomiting and drooling, and several plants sold as jasmine are far worse.

Also known as: Common Jasmine, Poet’s Jasmine, Jessamine · Jasminum officinale

What makes it toxic

Unidentified irritant glycosides in the foliage and flowers of Jasminum species. They inflame the gut mildly but consistently in cats that chew them.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, mild diarrhea and slight lethargy within a few hours of eating plant material.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove access, offer water and monitor for a day. Call your vet if vomiting repeats, and identify exactly which “jasmine” your cat chewed.

Common questions

Which jasmines are dangerous vs mild?

True jasmine (Jasminum) is mild. Star jasmine (Trachelospermum) and night-blooming jessamine (Cestrum) are more toxic — Cestrum can be serious. Check the botanical name.

Is jasmine tea or jasmine rice a risk?

No. Processed products carry negligible plant toxin and are not a cat poisoning route.

Is the fragrant flower the toxic part?

The whole plant carries the irritants. The flower is not more dangerous, just the most noticed part.
