Is Lavender Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: English Lavender, Garden Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia · Lavandula angustifolia
What makes it toxic
Linalool and linalyl acetate, terpene compounds in the plant. Cats lack the liver enzymes to process terpenes well, so they accumulate; the living plant is dilute, but essential oils are hundreds of times stronger.
Warning signs to watch for
Mild nausea, drooling, vomiting and loss of appetite after chewing the plant. Essential oil exposure can add wobbliness, lethargy, trouble breathing and even liver stress.
What to do if your cat eats it
Move the plant out of reach and offer water. For a chewed plant, monitor — signs are usually mild and self-limiting. For any essential oil on fur, in a diffuser mishap or swallowed, call your vet right away.
Common questions
Is a lavender essential oil diffuser dangerous for my cat?
Passive diffusion in a large room is usually low risk, but direct contact, spills and concentrated drops licked from fur can cause real poisoning. Keep oils locked away and give the cat an exit from the room.
Can a cat die from eating lavender plants?
It is very unlikely from the plant itself. Significant harm requires concentrated oil, not the flowers or leaves.
Why does my cat avoid lavender anyway?
Most cats dislike the strong scent, which acts as a natural deterrent. The ones that chew it anyway still only get mild effects from the raw plant.
