Is Lemongrass Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Coconut Grass, Citronella Grass, Cymbopogon citratus · Cymbopogon citratus
What makes it toxic
Citral and other essential oils concentrated in the tough stalks. Cats have limited ability to metabolize these terpenes, so moderate to large ingestion causes GI and mild neurological effects.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, mild lethargy and loss of appetite within hours of eating a substantial amount. Very large ingestions can add wobbliness.
What to do if your cat eats it
Remove the plant, offer water and monitor. Small nibbles need no treatment; call your vet if vomiting repeats or the cat becomes unusually quiet or unsteady.
Common questions
Is lemongrass the same as cat grass?
No. Cat grass is usually wheat, oat or barley grass, which is fully safe. Lemongrass is an aromatic oil-bearing plant, so it only belongs on the safe list in tiny amounts.
Is lemongrass essential oil safe to diffuse around cats?
Be cautious. Cats are sensitive to concentrated citrus-scented terpenes, and direct exposure can cause drooling, wobbliness and breathing irritation. Keep oils away from cats.
Why does my cat like chewing lemongrass?
The long blades are tempting to chew and the citrus scent attracts some cats. Provide true cat grass as a safer chew target and keep lemongrass out of easy reach.
