Lucky bamboo is mildly to moderately toxic to cats — and it is not a true bamboo. Chewing its leaves causes vomiting, drooling and sometimes wobbly walking.

Also known as: Ribbon Plant, Ribbon Dracaena, Dracaena sanderiana · Dracaena sanderiana

What makes it toxic

Saponins, the same irritant glycosides found throughout Dracaena species. They irritate the stomach lining and, in cats, can affect coordination and pupil size.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite and depression within hours. Cats may also show dilated pupils, loud meowing and incoordination.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove access, rinse the mouth and offer water. Call your vet if vomiting persists, or if the cat becomes wobbly, unresponsive or stops eating — those need same-day assessment.

Common questions

Is lucky bamboo related to real bamboo?

No. It is a Dracaena marketed as bamboo for Feng Shui. True bamboo is generally safe, but lucky bamboo carries Dracaena saponins.

Why is it called ribbon plant too?

The twisted stems and striped leaves earned it that name. The same Dracaena sanderiana plant is sold under several names, all mildly toxic.

My cat drank the water the lucky bamboo sits in — is that a problem?

Some saponins can leach into the water. A few licks rarely cause more than mild drooling, but watch for vomiting and move the arrangement out of reach.
