Marigolds are only mildly toxic to cats. Chewing the plant can cause drooling and an upset stomach, and some cats get mild skin irritation from the sap.

Also known as: African Marigold, French Marigold, Tagetes erecta · Tagetes erecta

What makes it toxic

Thiophenes and other phototoxic compounds in Tagetes foliage and flowers, which irritate the gut and, in sensitive individuals, mildly sensitize skin to sunlight.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, mild vomiting or diarrhea within hours. Contact with sap can redden skin on the paws or ears; signs are typically mild and short-lived.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove access, offer water and monitor. Call your vet only if vomiting persists or skin irritation spreads — most cases settle on their own.

Common questions

Is pot marigold (calendula) different?

Yes. Calendula officinalis, often also called marigold, is on the non-toxic list. The mild risk described here applies to Tagetes species.

Why do gardeners plant marigolds near pets anyway?

Their mildness plus pest-repelling reputation makes them a common choice. Even so, a cat that eats a lot can still get a temporary stomachache.

Can marigold sap hurt my cat’s skin?

Occasionally. Wipe sap off with a damp cloth and keep the cat indoors during bright sun if a red patch appears.
