The peace lily is mildly toxic to cats. Despite the name it is not a true lily — chewing it burns the mouth but does not cause the kidney failure real lilies do.

Also known as: Spathiphyllum, White Sails, Spathiphyllum wallisii · Spathiphyllum wallisii

What makes it toxic

Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in the leaves, stems and flowers. Chewing releases needle-like crystals that pierce the mouth and throat lining.

Warning signs to watch for

Immediate drooling, mouth pain, pawing at the face, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. Signs usually peak within an hour and fade over several hours.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth with water, remove plant material and offer water or a splash of milk to soothe. Call your vet if drooling and vomiting persist or breathing seems affected.

Common questions

Is a peace lily as deadly as an Easter lily for cats?

No — and the distinction matters enormously. True lilies destroy kidneys; peace lily is an aroid that only irritates the mouth. Still keep it out of reach.

Why is it called a lily if it is not one?

The white spathe resembles a calla-style bloom. Botanically it is Spathiphyllum in the aroid family, unrelated to Lilium.

Can I keep one safely if my cat has never touched it?

Some owners do for years, but one curious evening can change that. A hanging planter or a different plant removes the gamble.
