Philodendron is mildly toxic to cats. Chewing the vine burns the mouth with oxalate crystals, causing drooling and vomiting — painful but rarely dangerous.

Also known as: Heartleaf Philodendron, Philodendron hederaceum · Philodendron hederaceum

What makes it toxic

Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout leaves, stems and roots. When chewed, the needle crystals pierce the mouth, tongue and throat tissue.

Warning signs to watch for

Instant drooling, mouth pain, pawing at the face, vomiting and refusing food or water for several hours.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth with water, remove any vine material and offer water or a little milk. Call your vet if drooling and vomiting continue past a few hours or breathing looks labored.

Common questions

Which is worse for a cat, philodendron or a true lily?

Philodendron is painful but temporary; a true lily can cause fatal kidney failure from a tiny lick. Never confuse the two families.

Are all philodendron varieties toxic?

Yes — heartleaf, Brasil, selloum, moonlight and every other cultivar carry the same crystals.

How do I keep a trailing philodendron with a cat?

Hang it well above reach — trailing vines dangle right at cat height otherwise. If the cat is a committed climber, choose a non-toxic plant.
