Poinsettia is only mildly toxic to cats. The milky sap irritates the mouth and stomach, but the deadly-reputation stories are myths.

Also known as: Christmas Flower, Euphorbia pulcherrima · Euphorbia pulcherrima

What makes it toxic

Diterpenoid euphorbol esters and saponin-like compounds in the milky white latex sap, which irritate the mouth and gut on contact.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, lip licking, mild vomiting and occasionally diarrhea within hours. Sap on skin or eyes can cause temporary redness and itching.

What to do if your cat eats it

Rinse the mouth, wipe sap off fur with a damp cloth and offer water. Call your vet only if vomiting persists or the eyes look painful — most cases need nothing.

Common questions

Will poinsettia kill my cat?

Almost certainly not. Studies and poison-control data show poinsettia causes mild, self-limiting irritation — the killer-plant reputation is a decades-old myth.

Is it worse than holly or mistletoe?

No, it is the mildest of the three holiday plants. Holly causes more GI upset and mistletoe adds heart risks.

My cat bit a leaf and now drools — normal?

Yes, that is the expected mild reaction. Rinse the mouth, and the drooling should fade within an hour or two.
