Yes, poppies are toxic to cats. The plants contain opioid compounds that can cause sedation, breathing depression and potentially coma.

Also known as: Opium Poppy, Oriental Poppy, Papaver spp. · Papaver spp.

What makes it toxic

Opioid alkaloids such as morphine and codeine concentrated in the milky latex, seed capsules and, to a lesser degree, other tissues. They depress the central nervous system and respiration.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, unusual drowsiness, constricted pupils, stumbling, slowed breathing and, in serious cases, coma.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove plant material and call your vet or a poison hotline immediately. Drowsiness, pinpoint pupils or slow breathing is an emergency — opioid antidotes exist and timing matters.

Common questions

Are poppy seeds from the kitchen dangerous?

Bakery poppy seeds carry only trace alkaloids, so a spilled muffin is a general snack issue rather than opioid poisoning — but whole capsules in the garden are a genuine hazard.

Are California poppies different?

Eschscholzia is a different genus with milder, poorly documented toxicity. Treat any poppy-named plant cautiously unless confirmed safe.

Do all Papaver species contain the opioids?

Papaver somniferum is by far the strongest; oriental and field poppies contain related alkaloids at lower levels. None should be chewed.
