Is Wild Arum Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Cuckoo Pint, Lords-and-Ladies, Arum maculatum · Arum maculatum
What makes it toxic
Insoluble calcium oxalate raphides plus saponin-like irritants, densest in the bright red berries and the tuber. Chewing drives needle crystals into mouth and throat tissue.
Warning signs to watch for
Immediate burning, heavy drooling, pawing at the mouth, reluctance to eat and possible vomiting. Throat swelling is possible with a bigger bite of berries.
What to do if your cat eats it
Rinse the mouth with water, offer water or milk and watch for an hour. Call your vet if drooling and vomiting continue, the tongue swells, or breathing sounds noisy.
Common questions
Are the red berries the most dangerous part?
Yes — berry flesh has the highest crystal concentration, and their sweetness tempts animals. Leaves and the tuber also irritate.
Is wild arum the same as Italian arum?
They are close relatives with the same oxalate defense. Both belong out of reach of pets and children.
