Is Wild Cherry Toxic to Cats?
Also known as: Black Cherry, Chokecherry, Prunus serotina · Prunus serotina
What makes it toxic
Cyanogenic glycosides (amygdalin and prunasin) in leaves, stems and seeds. When plant tissue is chewed or wilts, they release hydrogen cyanide, which blocks cellular oxygen use.
Warning signs to watch for
Rapid breathing that turns labored, bright red gums, dilated pupils, drooling, vomiting, weakness, seizures and collapse, often within an hour.
What to do if your cat eats it
Emergency. Go to a veterinary ER immediately — do not wait for symptoms to worsen. Bring a sample of what was chewed. Oxygen and antidote treatment early is the difference between recovery and death.
Common questions
How much wild cherry is dangerous for a cat?
Very little. A few wilted leaves or a chewed stem can release a lethal cyanide dose for a cat’s small body.
Are dried cherry branches sold for chewing safe?
Treat all Prunus wood and foliage as unsafe for cats. Storm-damaged and wilting branches are the most cyanide-rich, so keep cats away from downed limbs after storms.
