Yaupon holly is mildly toxic to cats. The berries and leaves contain saponins and caffeine-like compounds that cause vomiting and drooling.

Also known as: Yaupon, Cassina, Ilex vomitoria · Ilex vomitoria

What makes it toxic

Saponins (ilicin-related compounds) and small amounts of caffeine-like methylxanthines in leaves and especially berries. They irritate the gut in quantity.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and head-shaking from the spiny leaves within a few hours of chewing berries or foliage.

What to do if your cat eats it

Remove plant material, rinse the mouth if leaves scratched it, and monitor. Call your vet if vomiting repeats or the cat seems unusually dull.

Common questions

Does the species name vomitoria mean it makes pets vomit?

The name came from indigenous ceremonial use of strong tea, not from pet toxicity. Still, berries eaten by a cat commonly cause vomiting — the chemistry fits the reputation.

Is yaupon tea safe if my cat laps some?

A lap of brewed yaupon tea adds caffeine exposure on top of the plant compounds. Do not share; keep cups out of reach.
