Aloe vera is mildly to moderately toxic to dogs. The skin and latex layer of the leaf contain compounds that irritate the digestive system.

Also known as: Aloe, Medicinal Aloe, Aloe barbadensis miller · Aloe barbadensis miller

What makes it toxic

Saponins and anthraquinone glycosides in the leaf latex, which irritate the stomach and intestines and have a laxative effect.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, lethargy and abdominal discomfort. Urine may darken in noticeable cases.

What to do if your dog eats it

Take the plant away, let the dog drink water and watch for ongoing vomiting. Contact your vet if symptoms persist beyond a few hours.

Common questions

My dog licked a broken aloe leaf — is that bad?

A single lick of the clear inner gel is unlikely to cause more than mild stomach upset. Watch for vomiting and call the vet if it continues.

Is aloe in dog shampoo dangerous?

Topical aloe products formulated for pets are generally fine, because the saponin-rich latex is removed and the dog does not ingest a meaningful amount.
