Yes — sago palm is severely toxic to dogs, with a documented fatality rate around 50% when untreated. The seeds are the most dangerous part.

Also known as: Cycad, Coontie Palm, Cardboard Palm, Cycas revoluta · Cycas revoluta

What makes it toxic

Cycasin, a potent hepatotoxin that destroys liver cells, plus BMAA, a neurotoxin. Both occur throughout the plant and are concentrated in seeds and the root ball.

Warning signs to watch for

Acute vomiting and drooling within minutes to hours, then diarrhea, bruising and bleeding, yellowing of gums and eyes, seizures, wobbliness and signs of liver failure within 2–3 days.

What to do if your dog eats it

This is a drop-everything emergency. Get the dog to a vet at once. Tell the vet which part and roughly how much was eaten — decontamination and IV therapy started early dramatically improve survival.

Common questions

How fast does sago poisoning show in dogs?

GI signs often appear within 15 minutes to a few hours; liver failure indicators take 2–3 days, which is why immediate vet care matters even when the dog seems to recover.

Is the sago palm safe if only the leaves are chewed?

No. Leaves, stems, roots and seeds all contain cycasin. There is no safe part of the plant.
