Is Baneberry Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Doll’s Eyes, White Baneberry, Red Baneberry, Actaea pachypoda · Actaea pachypoda
What makes it toxic
Protoanemonin-forming glycosides and cardiogenic compounds concentrated in the berries. They inflame the digestive tract and, in quantity, have caused cardiac and neurologic effects in animals.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, oral pain, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping within hours. Bigger meals of berries can add weakness, wobbliness, slowed or irregular heartbeat and seizures.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove berries from the mouth, rinse with water and call your vet or a pet poison hotline for triage, mentioning roughly how many berries were eaten. Go in urgently for weakness, collapse or seizure activity.
Common questions
How many doll’s eyes berries can hurt a dog?
Human case reports show severe symptoms from as few as a handful of berries, and dogs eating a similar amount can get seriously ill. Any confirmed berry meal deserves a poison-control call.
Are red baneberry and white baneberry equally toxic?
Yes. Both Actaea species contain the same irritating glycosides, and neither berry color is safe.
