Bay laurel is mildly to moderately toxic to dogs. Eating leaves causes vomiting and diarrhea, and swallowed whole leaves can lodge in the gut.

Also known as: Sweet Bay, Bay Tree, Grecian Laurel, Laurus nobilis · Laurus nobilis

What makes it toxic

Eugenol and other volatile oils in leaves and stems that irritate the gastrointestinal tract; the leathery leaf adds a physical obstruction hazard.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and depression within hours. A lodged whole leaf can cause persistent vomiting and abdominal pain.

What to do if your dog eats it

Remove leaves, offer water and watch. Call your vet if vomiting is repeated, the dog seems painful, or a whole leaf was swallowed — obstruction needs prompt care.

Common questions

My dog ate a bay leaf from the stew pot — what should I do?

Watch closely for the next day. Many dogs pass it, but persistent vomiting or a painful belly means a vet visit for possible obstruction.

Are California bay and bay laurel the same risk?

Both should be kept from pets. California bay (Umbellularia) is even more pungent, with stronger irritant oils.
