Is Begonia Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Wax Begonia, Tuberous Begonia, Rex Begonia · Begonia spp.
What makes it toxic
Soluble calcium oxalates, most concentrated in the tuber and roots. They irritate the mouth and gut and, in large amounts, can stress the kidneys.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, lip licking, vomiting and oral discomfort within hours. Tuber ingestion can bring repeated vomiting and more severe signs.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove the plant, rinse the mouth and offer water. Call your vet for any tuber ingestion or if vomiting continues for more than several hours.
Common questions
My dog dug up a begonia tuber in the garden — how bad is that?
That is the high-risk part of the plant. Call your vet promptly with an estimate of how much was chewed, even if the dog currently looks normal.
Do bedding wax begonias carry the same risk?
Yes, though their small roots hold less toxin than big tubers. A chewed wax begonia usually means drooling and short-lived vomiting.
