Is Christmas Rose Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Black Hellebore, Lenten Rose · Helleborus niger
What makes it toxic
Protoanemonin, a vesicant oil, plus helleborin-type glycosides concentrated in the roots, acting on the gut and in large doses the heart.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain within hours. Heavy ingestions can cause tremors and abnormal heart rhythm.
What to do if your dog eats it
Rinse the mouth with water and remove leftovers. Call your vet for any confirmed ingestion; an ER visit is warranted for tremors or heart irregularities.
