Is False Hellebore Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Corn Lily, Indian Hellebore, White Hellebore · Veratrum viride (and Veratrum album)
What makes it toxic
Veratrine-type steroidal alkaloids, concentrated especially in the roots but present throughout, which overstimulate nerve and cardiac cells, driving vomiting, bradycardia and hypotension.
Warning signs to watch for
Violent repeated vomiting within minutes to a few hours, heavy drooling, weakness, wobbliness, slow or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, tremors and collapse.
What to do if your dog eats it
Go to a vet immediately after known ingestion, even if the dog already vomited — the cardiac effects outlast the stomach upset. Bring a plant sample so treatment is not delayed by guesswork.
Common questions
My dog dug up a root while hiking — is that worse?
Yes, roots hold the highest alkaloid concentration, and dogs that dig are the classic exposure. Treat root chewing as a full emergency regardless of how the dog looks.
Is dried false hellebore in hay still toxic?
Yes, the alkaloids persist in dried material, which is why hay contamination has poisoned livestock. Dried stalks in a meadow or hay bale are not safe to chew.
