Is Iris Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Bearded Iris, Flag Iris, Blue Flag · Iris germanica
What makes it toxic
Irisin and other iridoid glycosides in rhizomes, roots and foliage. They inflame the GI tract and can depress the nervous system in significant doses.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and abdominal discomfort within hours. Larger rhizome meals can leave a dog visibly dull.
What to do if your dog eats it
Take material away, offer water and call your vet, especially after rhizome exposure. Dogs that dig iris beds are the classic case — supportive care resolves most.
Common questions
My dog dug up iris rhizomes — emergency?
Call the vet today. Rhizomes are the most toxic part, and early decontamination prevents a rough night.
Is iris sap a skin irritant too?
Handling iris can irritate skin in sensitive animals, but real toxicity needs ingestion. Wash sap off the coat if contacted.
