Is Morning Glory Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Common Morning Glory, Ipomoea tricolor · Ipomoea tricolor
What makes it toxic
Ergoline alkaloids (lysergic acid amides) concentrated in the seeds, plus milder gut irritants in the foliage. The alkaloids act on serotonin pathways in the brain.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting and diarrhea within hours, then dilated pupils, stumbling, confusion, agitation or unusual drowsiness, and tremors with larger seed doses.
What to do if your dog eats it
Remove pods, estimate how many seeds were eaten and call your vet immediately. Any disorientation, shaking or collapse is an ER situation.
Common questions
Why does my dog dig at the vine base?
Dropped seed pods accumulate there. Pods are the most toxic part, so rake them up and block access to the vine foot.
How long do morning glory seed effects last?
Neurological signs can persist many hours and sedation may linger into the next day — which is why veterinary supervision is recommended rather than home watching.
Is the related sweet potato vine the same?
Sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas) is a relative that is generally milder, but seeds of any Ipomoea deserve respect.
