Is Peace Lily Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Spathiphyllum, White Sails, Spathiphyllum wallisii · Spathiphyllum wallisii
What makes it toxic
Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals stored in the plant tissue, released when chewed. They mechanically injure the mouth, tongue and throat.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, lip licking, pawing at the mouth, mild vomiting and reluctance to drink within minutes of chewing.
What to do if your dog eats it
Rinse the dog’s mouth with water, remove any leaves and offer fresh water. Contact your vet if the dog keeps vomiting or cannot swallow comfortably after a few hours.
Common questions
How much peace lily leaf is harmful to a dog?
One or two chewed leaves already hurt the mouth. Serious internal damage is unlikely because the pain stops dogs early.
Is it the same plant as calla lily?
No, though both are aroids with the same crystal type and similar mild risk. Neither is a true Lilium.
Does the white flower also carry crystals?
Yes — leaves, stems and the white spathe all contain them, so no part is a chew toy.
