Poinsettia is mildly toxic to dogs. The sap causes drooling and mild vomiting, but it does not live up to its deadly reputation.

Also known as: Christmas Flower, Euphorbia pulcherrima · Euphorbia pulcherrima

What makes it toxic

Milky latex containing diterpenoid euphorbol esters and saponin-like irritants, released whenever a leaf or stem is broken.

Warning signs to watch for

Drooling, lip smacking, mild vomiting and occasional diarrhea. Sap contact can redden the muzzle or eyes temporarily.

What to do if your dog eats it

Rinse the mouth, clean sap from fur and offer water. Contact your vet only if vomiting continues or eyes are irritated — most cases settle within hours.

Common questions

How did poinsettia get its terrible reputation?

A 1919 story of a child’s death, later found to be unverified, spread for decades, and poison centers have repeatedly debunked it since.

My dog shredded a whole poinsettia — ER?

Unlikely to be an emergency. Expect a day of mild GI grumbling; call your vet only if vomiting is repeated or the dog refuses food beyond that.

Is sap in the eye serious?

It hurts and reddens the eye, so flush with clean water and have the vet look if squinting or discharge continues.
