Is Spanish Dagger Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Moundlily Yucca, Needle Palm, Yucca gloriosa · Yucca gloriosa
What makes it toxic
Steroidal saponins in all plant parts, which irritate and damage the intestinal lining. The rigid leaf tips cause mechanical injuries, especially to curious noses and paws.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea and hunched abdominal posture within hours. Leaf-tip injuries show as small bleeding punctures around the muzzle.
What to do if your dog eats it
Rinse the mouth, check the muzzle and paws for punctures, and call your vet. Persistent vomiting or any puncture wound warrants an examination.
Common questions
My dog ran into the yucca but did not eat it — any risk?
Only the physical one. Check for punctures and splinters; toxicity requires actually chewing or swallowing plant material.
Are yucca leaves toxic when dried or in mulch?
Yes, saponins persist in dried plant material, so keep yucca clippings out of reach and out of pet-area mulch.
