Is Weeping Fig Toxic to Dogs?
Also known as: Benjamin Fig, Ficus Tree, Ficus benjamina · Ficus benjamina
What makes it toxic
Latex sap with ficin enzymes that irritate the mouth and gut and commonly cause allergic contact dermatitis.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, mild diarrhea and itchy red skin on areas that touched the sap, usually within an hour.
What to do if your dog eats it
Rinse the mouth, wash contacted skin with mild soap and water, and offer fresh water. Contact your vet if vomiting repeats or the rash worsens.
Common questions
Why did my dog break out in a rash after the ficus was repotted?
Repotting releases plenty of latex sap, and contact dermatitis from ficus is well documented in dogs. Wash the area and keep the dog away during plant care.
Are all ficus species irritating?
Most Ficus species carry the same latex — rubber plant and fiddle-leaf fig included — so treat the whole genus as mildly toxic.
